EVEN AS A SMALL CHILD , living in Sindelfingen, Germany, I had the strong urge to find God. During storms I wouldn't run to my parents, because I felt there was greater protection in something much higher. I would pull the covers over my head and think about God. That made me feel safe.

At the age of 15, when my father—who had always helped me with my schoolwork—passed on, I had difficulties in school. I also experienced great disappointment in a particular friendship. I knew then that there must be more than people to lean on for support and happiness. There had to be more to life.
