The power of living love
A friend of mine, a school teacher, is just about the most unselfish, loving person I know. Children and adults alike feel cherished and supported by her gentle thoughtfulness and her tender, yet strong presence, so much so that they are inspired to express their best, Godlike qualities—which she sees in them even before they know they have them! In her eyes, everybody shines. And because she expects them to shine, they try their best to measure up. In her daily walk and talk, my friend moves closely and prayerfully with God, with Love itself. You'd say she lives love.
Love that has its source in God is the most awesome power on earth. It transforms lives. Jesus, the master Christian, showed us God's great love for each of us through his life and healing ministry. As Sentinel founder Mary Baker Eddy explained, Jesus was able to "demonstrate the Science of Love—his Father or divine Principle" (Science and Health, p. 30).
Mrs. Eddy emphasized the importance of actively expressing love in daily deeds. She wrote, ". . .it is the tender, unselfish deed done in secret; the silent, ceaseless prayer; the self-forgetful heart that overflows; the veiled form stealing on an errand of mercy, out of a side door; the little feet tripping along the sidewalk; the gentle hand opening the door that turns toward want and woe, sickness and sorrow, and thus lighting the dark places of earth" (Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896, p. 250).
