THE DISEASE WAS GONE
A couple of years ago, a friend described the rigors of treatment he'd gone through for prostate cancer. Shortly after this, another friend, who'd had to deal with the same condition, urged me to undergo medical testing for the disease. Instead, I explained my spiritual approach to healthcare and my reliance on scientific prayer in Christian Science.
I immediately began to pray about this and made a specific effort to dismiss the mental images my friends had shared, particularly their conviction that men of our age might be vulnerable to the disease. Yet about two weeks later, I began to experience the symptoms they'd described, including severe pain.
I chose not to obtain a diagnosis, however, bearing in mind this guidance from Mary Baker Eddy: "A physical diagnosis of disease—since mortal mind must be the cause of disease—tends to induce disease" (Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, p. 370).
