'THE HEALING WAS GRACEFUL AND IMMEDIATE ...'

One night, I'd invited eight friends over for dinner, and was busy stirring a double batch of spicy curry on the stove while these friends and my husband chatted in the living room. The simmering curry began to boil rapidly as I stirred. A large portion suddenly splashed into my eye, which both hurt and startled me.

I dropped the spoon and turned to the sink to rinse the eye. Immediately a clear angel message from God came into my consciousness: "A spiritual idea cannot burn." To me, this meant that I was not a mere physical, mortal being—but rather the expression, the complete and perfect reflection, of an all-good God.

In her description of man (which applies to both men and women) in Science and Health, Mary Baker Eddy wrote: "Man is spiritual and perfect. ... Man is idea, the image, of Love; he is not physique" (p. 475). Ever since I was a child, I've loved to substitute my name wherever the word man is used. I would read, "Jen is spiritual and perfect. ... Jen is idea, the image of Love...." Right then, in the kitchen, acknowledging my oneness with God, Love itself, made me feel so cared for. I knew I was safe and unharmed at that precise moment—and always. With that realization, my fear vanished.
