'I FELT A NEWFOUND SENSE OF NORMALCY AND WHOLENESS'
Early in the summer of 2006, I was racing out the door to a Wednesday evening testimony meeting at my local Christian Science church when I ran into a piece of exercise equipment. The big toe on my right foot caught on a sharp piece of metal, and I immediately began to feel pain. As I looked down at the toe, I saw that a portion had been very deeply cut, and the appearance was alarming. Having had many healings through the study and application of Christian Science alone, I knew that I could safely turn to the calming influence of the Christ to dissolve my fears and bring freedom from pain.
Immediately prior to this incident, I had completed a course on Christian Science healing called Primary class instruction. So it felt completely natural in this case to turn to God. I did not pray for Him to "heal my toe," but I reached out with my whole being to hear and feel what He was communicating to me at that moment. The message I heard was, "Are you going to church? If so, move forward!" That was not exactly what I was expecting, but as I prayed to be obedient, the pain abated. I was able to wash and bandage the toe. Then, I headed off to church.
During the church service, I was so grateful for the calm, loving, and uplifted atmosphere. It hit me all of a sudden that this was what Christian Science healing was all about—spiritual ideas coming to each of us exactly when we need them, in useful ways. At that moment, I realized that although my prayers had given me much-needed relief from pain, I was more absorbed with the shift in my thought—from acute awareness of my physical condition to deep spiritual peace. This reminded me of a passage in Miscellaneous Writings 1883-1896 byMary Baker Eddy: "God gives you His spiritual ideas, and in turn, they give you daily supplies" (p. 307).
