Taking spiritual flight

Those of us who work on the Sentinel often look out of our windows toward the 25th-floor ledge of the Christian Science Church's Administration building in Boston, where a family of peregrine falcons has nested safely for over ten years. From time to time we catch sight of them and wonder how they're all doing.

To some extent most of us are environmentalists now—increasingly concerned about endangered species, climate change, and carbon footprints. And readers have indicated they appreciate our giving ongoing column inches to environmental topics, which include the feathered friends who swoop across our landscape.

In the first article this week, Lyle Young suggests that such topics present an opportunity to improve the quality of our thinking. "As we view the world and its inhabitants as spiritual," he writes, "our own behavior and that of others relative to the environment will improve. ... God will lead us to new technologies that make better use of Earth's resources."
