'MY FEAR BEGAN TO DISSOLVE'
In the fall of 2005, on returning home after a long weekend away, I was distressed to find that a steady, heavy rain had generated torrential floods which had torn through our small town. The water had damaged about one third of the town's dwellings, and 30 more homes had washed away, attended by a loss of life. Because my wife and I lived on high ground, our residence was untouched, for which I was thankful, but my heart went out to those who had lost so much.
A few weeks later, I began to suffer from severe chest pains, which made sleeping extremely difficult. In fact, for most of the next month, I slept only about two hours a night, and sat up praying to discern my true spiritual identity as God's child. I had never experienced the symptoms of heart trouble before, but daily the thought of hereditary heart disease hung over me, because several family members had succumbed to it.
I called a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to pray with me for healing. Right away, I considered a spiritual truth based on a passage in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, bringing out that because there is no life in matter, life is not dependent on the physical body (see p. 289). Life is spiritual, dependent on God alone. The practitioner urged me to begin my prayers with the metaphysical concept of a perfect cause—God—and a perfect effect—me. I was governed forever by that undisturbed, divine Cause, which had never sanctioned either a disastrous occurrence or an injurious condition.
