ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER

'LEAD ME IN THE WAY EVERLASTING'

YEARS AGO, during my confirmation in the Lutheran Church, the pastor chose this passage from Psalms for me: "Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting" (139:23, 24). I had no idea how far reaching this message would prove to be for me.

As a child, I'd lived in Germany through the last years of World War II. Several troubling experiences were hard to forget, and even harder to understand. My mind was full of questions such as, What is life all about? and, What am I doing here? Later, as a college student, my goals were simply to learn a profession, earn good money, and live the best way possible—with the least amount of effort. Certainly I'd never considered anything involving healing people through prayer.

At my part-time job, the boss's wife had begun reading Science and Health, and she would sometimes talk about it. I thought I was superior to her academically and would challenge her with questions. But she was patient. And I noticed that, interestingly, in her brief time of reading it she'd become less nervous and seemed peaceful and happy.
