'TRIALS ARE PROOFS OF GOD'S CARE'

Several years ago I became quite ill, and my mobility was severely limited. The nature of the problem necessitated my resting most of each day, and discomfort often prevented much sleep at night. It was difficult to find a way to be comfortable, so I alternated between lying down and standing at the kitchen counter, resting my elbows on a cushion.

I didn't consult a doctor because I'd had previous healings that showed me I could rely exclusively on God and the teachings of Christian Science for healing. When the symptoms of pain and limitation first appeared, I'd asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray with me. This was a period of spiritual development, unfoldment, and maturing. Fear, discouragement, and feeling separated from God, repeatedly had to be addressed through vigorous and persistent Christian Science treatment. I prayed to understand that the chaos I was experiencing couldn't be the truth about me, since God, good, was the only presence and power.

When my health seemed to be degenerating rather than improving, there were some dark moments, and doubt crept into my consciousness. It occurred to me that I might never recover from this illness. I told the practitioner about these aggressive, dark thoughts, and my fears were tenderly addressed.
