GOD'S REDEEMING GRACE

I was suffering with a stiff neck, unable to turn my head to the left or to the right. Over the years my study of the Bible and Science and Health has taught me to be receptive to God's healing message, whatever difficulty I may be having. In this instance I wanted to be free of the stiff neck, of course, but more than that, I was eager for spiritual insight.

It occurred to me to begin with the Holy Scriptures, and I asked a family member to look up Bible references to "stiff-necked." Here's one: "Now be ye not stiffnecked, as your fathers were, but yield yourselves unto the Lord, and enter into his sanctuary, which he hath sanctified for ever" (II Chron. 30:8).

A dictionary included the words haughty, stubborn in its definition of stiffnecked. Those two words immediately caught my attention, and I wondered if I might be harboring any stubbornness. Christian Science teaches—in addition to one's need to live an honest and loving life—that one's thinking directly affects the body. Unlovely or unkind thoughts have a negative effect, which is why I heeded what felt like a tap on the shoulder reminding me to check every aspect of my thinking.
