ANYONE WHO WATCHES television or listens to radio has become familiar with the scenario. Amid the routine tones of a news broadcast, an interruption occurs, sometimes with tense, urgent-sounding music, punctuated with announcements such as "This just in ..." or "We've just learned of breaking news ..."
