Winning with God

Four weeks of World Cup football in Germany. Fierce rivalry on baseball diamonds throughout the Americas. Months of bruising rugby in New Zealand, Australia, and South Africa. In this issue, it seemed to us appropriate to embrace those of you who don't have to take your sports quite so seriously in this change-of-pace month of July.

We've been thinking of people like business-executive-cum-cyclist Chuck Howes (see p. 12), who merge their athleticism with their commute to the office. His weekend "fun" rides often stretch to a hundred miles or more. He really means it when he says about long bike rides, "You have such wonderful opportunities to be with God and really count your blessings."

Then there's Jenny Roemer (see p. 10), who can't approach a racquetball court without hearing the voice of her coach urging her to "Take a breath before your shot"—which she translates as "Take spiritual pauses to express grace."
