THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

MORE THAN A SUNSET

NANCY ROBISON, NEWPORT BEACH, CALIFORNIA

When I'm taking pictures, I look for balance, light, and color. Sunsets with reflections in the water are among my favorite subjects. It's fascinating to watch as the sky changes from flat white light to an explosion of color.

At such times, I think of Mary Baker Eddy's observation: "Immortal and divine Mind presents the idea of God: first, in light, second, in reflection; third, in spiritual and immortal forms of beauty and goodness" (Science and Health, p. 503).

This picture embraces more than one of those elements. But taking it required patience. It was a cool, breezy evening, and I was tempted to go indoors and sit by a cozy fire. For a while, it didn't look as though there would be much of a sunset, but I felt impelled to wait . . . and wait. Then suddenly the whole sky lit up. My patience was rewarded. My joy complete! I felt enveloped in "beauty and goodness."
