EAR CONDITION AND FEAR OVERCOME

In November 2004, I got up one morning feeling pain in my right ear. Over the past 14 years, I have been depending on prayer as I've learned it in Christian Science for healing of any kind of problem in my life. Mary Baker Eddy explained in Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures that "there is no life, truth, intelligence, nor substance in matter. All is infinite Mind and its infinite manifestation, for God is All-in-all. . . . Spirit is God, and man is His image and likeness. Therefore man is not material; he is spiritual" (p. 468). So, when this pain began, I prayed to see myself as purely spiritual and free from material sensation.

I went to my office that day, but in the afternoon the pain became severe and I had difficulty hearing. I asked a Christian Science practitioner to pray for me, and he very lovingly agreed. He asked me to read the definition of ears in Science and Health as representing "not organs of the so-called corporeal senses, but spiritual understanding" (p. 585). I understood this to mean that there could be no material effects on my spiritual understanding, as there is no affinity between matter and Spirit.

The next day I was supposed to go to another city 50 kilometers [31 miles] away to deliver lectures as part of a training program. That night it was difficult to sleep, but still I decided to proceed on my scheduled duties and to continue praying for my freedom from the symptoms.
