HEALING THE HEART

By the time I was 15, I'd already played organized football for five years. I was entering high school and was set to begin playing on my school's championship team.

State law required that I take a physical examination to be eligible to play interscholastic sports. As a Christian Scientist, I'd been taught to comply with the law, so my mother arranged to have a local doctor see me. After the exam, the doctor would not sign my release to play sports, and asked me to have my mom call him. He told her he saw evidence of a heart defect that would not only prevent me from playing football or any other sport, but would severely limit physical activity the rest of my life, require me to take medication, and could be potentially life threatening—as well as inoperable.

Needless to say, this was a shock since I'd felt no discomfort. Quite honestly, it may have been a tossup as to which was a higher priority for me at the age of 15: loving God or loving football!
