"BEFORE NEW STUDENTS ARRIVE this summer for medical and dental classes at A.T. Still University in Mesa, they will be instructed to read one book: The Anatomy of Hope ... by oncologist Dr. Jerome Groopman.

"Geeting into the professional healing business, university leaders believe, carries a responsibility to engender hope in those seeking recovery.

"Most of us think of hope as a sort of abstract, ethereal concept,' said Dr. Bert Simon, chairman of the department of physician assistant studies at the university, 'but ... [people who are hopeful] do get better quicker, and they get better more often than people who don't have hope.'
