BEYOND VICTIMS AND VICTIMIZERS

Child Pornography continues to haunt our society, and the situation seems to be getting worse. The United States Congress recently heard testimony that further revealed the current methods and scope of the problem. One congressman said he had never read anything more disturbing than what he read in preparation for those hearings. The World Wide Web, combined with increasingly sophisticated technology, is being misused to lure and exploit the youngest and most vulnerable among us. No longer the pursuit of a few, child pornography is today a $20 billion dollar industry, and is still expanding. It has the size, impact, and pervasiveness of a large, multinational corporation.

It is an issue that clearly deserves our serious attention. It's right that a civilized society protect its children from predation of all kinds. And the congressional hearings in the US will hopefully lead to countermeasures that will help curb the exploitation of children worldwide.

But, beyond that, how might a community of spiritual activists—like the readers of this magazine—best address the situation, collectively and metaphysically? Christian Science teaches the supremacy of Mind, or God, and His infinite all-power. Through scientifically Christian prayer, we can expect the influence of the divine Mind to be increasingly evident in the world arena.
