ON A WATCH FOR HEALING

WHO WOULDN'T WANT TO FIND a happier, healthier, more productive life? That's definitely one of the unmistakable benefits of taking Primary class instruction in Christian Science. This entire issue of the Sentinel has been devoted to discussing Mary Baker Eddy's provision for teaching and learning how to practice the healing Science of Christ, which she discovered in 1866.

The purpose of this 12-lesson course of instruction is not first and foremost to help people live just for "the loaves and the fishes." Rather, its purpose is to learn how to grow spiritually and heal as Christ Jesus did, in order to glorify God and bring salvation and healing to humanity. Under the heading "Motive in Teaching," Mrs. Eddy wrote the following By-Law in the Manual of The Mother Church: "Teaching Christian Science shall not be a question of money, but of morals and religion, healing and uplifting the race" (p. 83).

The purpose of Christian Science class instruction is consistent with the mission of the Sentinel, provided by Mrs. Eddy, "to hold guard over Truth, Life, and Love" (The First Church of Christ, Scientist, and Miscellany, p. 353). Along with the other activities of the Church of Christ, Scientist, both class instruction and the Sentinel allow each individual to take part in a big-picture design for blessing both oneself and humanity.
