BUILDING AND REBUILDING COMMUNITIES WITH LOVE

Last month spirituality.com featured CINDY NEELY in a live Internet chat. A practitioner and teacher of Christian Science in Chicago, Illinois, Cindy spent a year as President of The First Church of Christ, Scientist, in Boston, where she worked with community groups to find solutions to the city's social and economic problems, She has traveled in the United States, Canada, Japan, Israel, England, and the Caribbean, speaking on women's issues, family, defeating racism, and overcoming addiction. You can access the entire event at www.spirituality.com/chats/community.

In her opening comments, Cindy pointed toward the prayer, courage, and spiritual vision that the Bible character Nehemiah needed to rebuild the wall of Jerusalem (see Neh., chaps. 1-6). She also referred to Jesus' parable of the good Samaritan (see Luke 10:25-37), noting the compassion of the Samaritan, as well as his willingness both to meet an injured man's immediate need and provide for his long-term care.

Since this was a live event, site visitors were able to post questions for Cindy to answer. Among them was a series of questions about conditions in New Orleans and the Gulf Coast of the United States and how prayer can help rebuild homes and lives in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Here are some of the questions and answers.
