ANYONE CAN BE A HEALER

A HEALER IN THE STORM

THE PUBLIC PRACTICE of Christian Science healing demands the discipline of Christly thought. I was never more grateful to have this demand made on me than last August, when we heard that Hurricane Katrina was headed our way.

We prepared to ride it out on our farm, 60 miles north of New Orleans, even though almost everyone we knew had already evacuated. A few family members and friends, all ordered to evacuate their homes, joined us. We had six dogs and a cat in the house, and four horses, two barn cats, and our pet wild boar in the barn. The winds were forecast at over 130 miles per hour, with even stronger gusts.

As Katrina roared ashore in south Louisiana on Monday morning, I made one last trip to the barn, in winds growing increasingly intense. By 10:30 we had lost electricity and all phone service. At 11:30 the full effect of the storm was upon us. In all my years in Louisiana, this was beyond any storm I'd experienced. Our metal roof felt and sounded as if it would be blown off, and the rain was coming in horizontally through every crack in the windows.
