Finding God

Many years ago, when I had just gotten out of the service, I was involved in an intensive search for God.

I'd been raised in two Protestant churches and attended a third. I'd read numerous books on philosophy and religions. Eastern religion was popular at that time, and I explored Eastern thought: Zen Buddhism, Taoism, Hinduism. One day, all of the searching began to come together for me. An experience I had began to shape my feelings about what I considered to be "God."

This crisp fall day, I was walking on a beach. The ocean was pure blue, the wind was a bit chilly, and the sun was high in the sky. Focused on the seeming infinitude of the sea, and the brilliance of the sun, I suddenly felt a distinct oneness with God and the universe. I felt "connected," "grounded" in Soul. I felt at one with my surroundings. Any sense of dualism—me here—God way up there somewhere—fell away. I felt incredible peace.
