THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

WHERE HEAVEN AND NATURE SING

Last spring I went to stay with friends who live in Spitzbergen in Norway. This is one of the most northerly places in the world—very remote, very wild, much of it untouched by humankind. A place for nature to shine in all its glory.

The second morning I went on a trip to see a nearby glacier. Despite the cold (40 degrees below), nature was alive and singing, with mountains and sky united. I was filled with joy as I looked around and photographed this image.

I felt uplifted, inspired, on top of the world—actually, I almost was! At the same time, some words from one of my favorite Christmas carols came to mind:

Joy to the world, the Lord is come,
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare him room,
And heaven and nature sing.

(Christian Science Hymnal, No. 164)

At that moment, my joy was complete.
