COMPLETE RECOVERY FROM A FALL

In the more than 40 years that I've been a student of Christian Science, I've had many healings through applying its teachings. I'm especially grateful for a recent experience that proved to me again how reliance on spiritually scientific facts brings prompt and lasting healing results.

One afternoon, I was at my church's Christian Science Reading Room, cleaning windows in the stairwell. I slipped off the ladder and fell to the bottom of the stairs, injuring my back and right side. I remember immediately affirming out loud the fact of my perfection as God's image (see Gen. 1:26). Because Spirit is one of the names the Bible gives for God, this declaration helped me see that my makeup wasn't a collection of material elements—muscles, bones, and other physical features subject to injury—but that I was wholly spiritual, made and maintained by God. It also helped me acknowledge that since my being was in God, there was no opportunity for an accident, since He is always in complete control of His creation. The harmony of His government could only be perpetual, since there is no opposing force within His allness.

Several people in the Reading Room came to assist me. After a few moments, I got up and sat in a chair, and then asked one of the attendants to call my wife to come and get me. Because my choice was to rely on Christian Science for healing, I also called a Christian Science practitioner on the telephone and requested prayerful treatment. When I told him what had happened, he said, "Man is upright and perfect." This was a further declaration of the facts about my spiritual identity as God's image. He assured me that he would begin praying immediately, and asked me to call him back shortly.
