"IN OCTOBER, a small group of church members formed the Random Acts of Kindness Group, which meets regularly to develop community projects and talk about how people can make the world a kinder place, one small act at a time. Acts range from returning a grocery cart to the store after unloading it to donating sick days to a co-worker, said Dan, a group member....

"The point, members say, isn't about receiving credit, but focusing on internalizing the message taught by Christ of being compassionate to others. 'It really comes back to the Golden Rule, "Do unto others as you would like them to do unto you," ' Dan... said.

" 'You make conscious choices,' said [group member] Marye.... 'Each of us... has realized the kinds of things we can do and how we can extend our life into a more compassionate way of living.'...
