ANKLE INJURY HEALED

One weekend in 1994, I lunged to catch a frisbee. When I landed, I twisted my ankle badly on some loose sand and gravel. The pain was intense, and I began to faint. Before I completely blacked out, I declared, "God is right here," and the darkness disappeared. Two friends helped me to a riverbank and seated me in a beach chair. I was with a group of Christian Science friends who knew I would choose to rely on prayer in this situation, and they were very comforting and supportive.

Shortly after this had happened, I went to my parents' house. My ankle was very swollen, and my foot had become discolored along one side. When my mother saw it, she wanted me to see an orthopedic surgeon immediately, since she felt sure it was broken. She had broken her ankle before and had had surgery. She knew that Christian Scientists sometimes do get broken bones set, and she suggested I do the same. However, I knew I could rely completely on prayer for healing, as it had healed me many times in the past, and I called a Christian Science practitioner for help.

In the following weeks, I thought deeply about the words of a hymn from the Christian Science Hymnal that begins, "From sense to Soul my pathway lies before me" (Violet Hay, No. 64). To me, this meant I had to turn my thoughts away from the picture of myself as a mortal with an injured ankle—the image the material senses presented—to see myself as the child of God, Soul, who lived and moved and had her being in God (see Acts 17:28).
