A PIONEER IN BOSTON

As CYNTHIA NEELY'S year-long tenure as President of The First Church of Christ, Scientist (The Mother Church), came to a close in June, she sat down with Sentinel Senior Writer Marilyn Jones to talk about the groundbreaking journey she's taken—about the friendships and alliances she's forged in the Boston area, and the spiritual byways she's traveled over this year of discovery.

Cindy, let's start by talking about what your vision or mission was a year ago—and if you feel you've accomplished what you set out to do.

When I became president last June, I knew I was going to be going out into the Boston community to establish relationships with clergy, civic leaders, and organizations. But I wasn't sure precisely how to go about it. I felt like a pioneer because this was the first time a Mother Church president had been brought specifically to live in Boston and to have a full-time job focusing exclusively on the local community.
