A YOUNG LIFE RESTORED

"SHE'S GOT A BABY!" EXCLAIMED OUR FRIEND Irma to my husband, Clarence, and the rest of the regular Wednesday lunch group as she saw me drive by from the restaurant window. I was very late. It was the first time in 17 years that I had experienced the joys of buckling a baby into a car seat. Little Eddie had been patient and good-natured as I worked hard to get his little body secured into the huge seat, but my inexperienced fumbling took many more minutes than allotted. By the time I'd parked and entered the restaurant with the baby, Clarence and I were barraged with questions, since we had told no one about the events of the past five months.

All our friends know that both Clarence and I come from very small families, and we had one child, our daughter, Dawn. It was the end of her senior year in high school, so we were considered to be "almost done" with child-raising.
