THROUGH A SPIRITUAL LENS

LAVENDER MIST

THIS MOUNTAIN AND LAKE loveliness rose to greet me early one morning last October at Glacier National Park in Montana. I raced to get my camera and managed to catch the vision while it was still a lavender mist.

J. G. Rheinberger's hymn "How Beautiful Is Thy Dwelling Place" often fills my mind when I am privileged to behold such amazing natural beauty.

Beauty points us toward the eternal. Behind the beauty of the mountains and lake, there is God. Even before the beauty appeared to human eyes, God knew it. As Mary Baker Eddy noted, "Beauty is a thing of life, which dwells forever in the eternal Mind and reflects the charms of His goodness in expression, form, outline, and color" (Science and Health, p. 247). This reminder of God's incredible grace, underlying His/Her beautiful creation, is sometimes all it takes to displace depression or sadness, filling us instead with an awareness of the majesty of the Holy.
