A GROWTH IS HEALED THROUGH SPIRITUAL STUDY AND PRAYER

In August 2004, I woke up one morning with cold symptoms, thinking that it was just a little thing to deal with. But the cold became serious and continued for several weeks. Then one day while I was struggling with the cold, I noticed a large growth on my breast.

During this time, I had been studying the book Science and Health, chapter by chapter. I was at the book's last chapter, "Fruitage," when I detected the growth. I continued my study and never stopped praying for myself—affirming that I was made in God's image, as it says in the Bible's first chapter. I prayed to understand better what God knows of me, and not to see myself as a sick person. I accepted that I was spiritually perfect, because a perfect God creates only spiritual perfection and never material imperfection.

I had to deal with fear. I knew it was fear itself that was trying to convince me that something God had not made was growing in me, or on my body. So I refused to be afraid. Science and Health describes fear as "the fountain of sickness." The book goes on to explain, "It is well to be calm in sickness; to be hopeful is still better; but to understand that sickness is not real and that Truth can destroy its seeming reality, is best of all, for this understanding is the universal and perfect remedy" (pp. 391, 393–394).
