FULL HEARING RESTORED

More than 20 years ago, I lost the hearing in one ear for no apparent reason. It never occurred to me to see a doctor, because I had turned to prayer for healing my whole life. However, as the mother of five active children, who was working full time, tending to husband, home, and church activities, I was hard pressed to find the time to pray for myself.

I felt swallowed up in busyness. My job gave me a great sense of importance and identity, and I had succumbed to the need to be recognized for my personal achievement. I hadn't detected the subtle, destructive feelings of self-righteousness, self-aggrandizement, and self-will that had crept into my thoughts. The hearing problem was inconvenient and annoying, and I wanted to be free of it so I could get on with my career and personal goals.

A year went by, and my hearing hadn't improved through my own sporadic prayers. The hearing loss was affecting my job, but more important, my interest in life. I had to ask people to repeat at least once everything they said. I felt exhausted at the end of each day from straining to hear.
