SEEING THROUGH THE PAIN TO GOD'S ALLNESS

I was on a construction site and very excited about this particular day, because together my dad, father-in-law, and I were going to build an open-beam ceiling, with big beams. I'd been very careful to protect myself from harm while on the job, but haste had taken my guard down, and I didn't even know it.

I was setting things up early in my excitement, running back and forth, bringing in tools, and preparing for the day. It was going to be a long day, but we had all arranged our schedules to do this project. Then I stepped on a board that had a nail sticking out of it. I saw the nail had gone completely through my foot.

I was so upset with myself for not paying attention. I was thinking that I had ruined the day; that I wasn't going to be able to walk; that I looked like a fool. And that I was going to have to scream out of frustration and pain. There were a million thoughts like these spinning in my head. But I knew they were not spiritual ideas from God. They were suggestions from "the carnal mind" (see Rom. 8:7), trying to disrupt me. And their sheer number—it seemed endless—actually made me hit a turning point in my approach. I was able to calmly set my foot back on the ground and let go of all those suggestions.
