My dance of freedom
Originally published in Le Héraut de la Christian Science
I'm a flamenco and classical Spanish dancer in my spare time. About five years ago, during a meeting at work, I felt a very sharp pain when I moved one of my shoulders. I didn't pay too much attention to it, but I hoped it was nothing serious because it was a Thursday, and on Saturday night I was to perform in a dance show. Years before, I had injured the same shoulder and hadn't been able to raise my arm for two days, dress myself, or drive.
There's a law in France that requires you to get a medical certificate to justify your absence from work for more than two days, in the case of illness. Since I wasn't able to move my arm to drive to work, I consulted a doctor who gave me three or four days off from work. He told me the injury would prevent me from dancing for at least two months.
Now this time I was afraid this was going to be a repeat scenario of the old injury, when I couldn't play the castanets for two weeks.
