A CONTINUING SERIES ON HOW CHURCH IS ACTIVE IN PEOPLE'S LIVES

New ways to serve God

'Boy, I'm sure glad Sunday School is over. Now I can go home and play!" I still remember saying those words to my mom many years ago, as I ran out the east door of our church on a warm Sunday morning. As with other boys my age, my sole purpose in life that summer was to play hard and have fun.

After my baby sister was born, I really started to question my reason for being. "Who am I?" "Why am I?" It didn't take long before I realized that, while church wasn't important to many of my friends, it was helping me answer those questions, and, just as important, helping me get through life.

In Sunday School, I remember learning amazing Bible stories, as well as being asked to recite what I'd learned Church is—not just a building, but "the structure of Truth and Love" (Science and Health, p. 583). At the time, I'm sure I didn't fully comprehend what that meant; however, as my thoughts on this subject developed, I began to realize that Church was not just a place to go; it was a living principle that I had to relate to in my life, one that would be a blessing to me. I saw that I could never really leave Church because Truth and Love referred to God, who was with me at all times—supporting me and defining my character.
