Suddenly single and looking for work
How was I supposed to make it? After a divorce, I was on my own financially—a freelance copywriter without steady work. I had no savings and no car. I lived in a town with little public transportation. No matter where I looked, there just wasn't a comfy cushion to rest on.
Although I was afraid, I was able to feel some spiritual reassurance. St. Paul in the Bible speaks of having a thorn in his side—a nagging problem. When he asked for help, God's answer was, "My grace is sufficient for thee" (II Cor. 12:9).
This comforted me because I think of the grace of God as being constant, a gentle influence for good, not something we have to struggle to earn. So now, I thought, couldn't the grace of God carry me forward? Something deep inside—probably that grace—kept me from going to pieces. I needed to keep going.
