Listening prayer turns a career around

The Hardest Part about learning to listen to God for guidance seems to be getting started. Sometimes getting your directions straight can even make you feel as if you've shifted into reverse gear instead of overdrive. But it can all turn into a nice round trip, one where you realize that you can never drive out of God's care. One of my earliest "listening-to-God" attempts turned out to be a real mile-marker.

For three years, I had been either unemployed or underemployed. With two college degrees and a professional certificate, I was prepared to work and wanted to work. And I did work whenever I could find employment. But during all those three years, I never did find a permanent job.

Part of the problem was the type of work I had prepared for — teaching. There simply were no teaching jobs open within 50 miles of my home in the Detroit area. Every time an opening appeared, hundreds of prospective teachers would apply, only to find the job had gone to someone coming back from leave or being transferred from another school inside the district.
