Bringing good into view

A young woman travels home to Africa to find sustainable solutions to Zimbabwe's hunger crisis.

Flying thousands of feet above the ground, I looked down on Zimbabwe. Miles and miles of land. Fertile land that used to be the breadbasket for much of Southern Africa. And here I was, flying to this place where there now seemed to be so much hunger, injustice, and poverty.

This was not the first time I'd traveled to Zimbabwe. I grew up in its neighboring country South Africa, and my grandmother and aunt live in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe. I spent many hot childhood summers in Zimbabwe. But this trip was for a very different purpose.

Over the past year I've been working with an international team in a nonprofit educational organization called the Brick Project [see the January 6, 2003, Sentinel]. My co-workers are from Africa, India, the United States, South America, and Europe, and represent a wide variety of professional fields. These people are all committed to finding solutions to the problems that face our world. My job is Director of the Brick Project, USA, and in that capacity I became active in developing a hunger response team: the Southern Africa Hunger Team.
