A good highway to take

Taking a trip soon? Whether traveling on a 14-hour airplane flight or taking a journey that is only measured in footsteps, most people reading this will probably answer, "Yes!"

I used to travel ten months out of the year—mostly by air—as part of my job responsibilities, logging in several hundreds of thousands of miles. No matter what the circumstances or where I happened to be, I found a way to feel safe and happy. What made me feel that way? Prayer. Prayer is something I have always packed and taken with me. The result has been a feeling of grace and serenity with each mile.

The kind of prayer that I'm talking about is based on admitting that God is with you constantly, loving you. In the light of this, it's nice to think of God as Shepherd. As you travel, chance isn't your shepherd; weather isn't your shepherd; even people's behavior isn't your shepherd. "The Lord is my shepherd," says the Bible (Ps. 23:1).
