THE 'SPECIAL GRACE' OF THE COLUMBIA CREW

Many woke to the news of the loss of the space shuttle Columbia on Saturday, February 1, 2003. Sadness fills the heart.

Those following the shuttle's 16-day mission of scientific research had been treated to almost hourly reports of discovery. Proving what had only been theory about cloud formation, testing new technology for water recycling, experimenting with microgravity and its effects—this is just a part of the legacy Columbia's last mission is leaving us.

Though results from dozens of successful experiments were transmitted to the ground, the crew has not returned. These researchers, who have added so much to our base of knowledge through their dedication and professionalism, are lost to us now, and the entire world mourns. "It's a very personal loss for everybody," said a citizen of Israel on CNN.
