GATHERING NEWS STORIES with a spiritual perspective week by week, we wondered what kinds of material the Sentinel of 100 years ago carried. Here is a glimpse into some of the Items of Interest and other excerpts from the Sentinel at the start of the 20th century.

Dr. Jean Charcot of Paris, has announced the plans for the Arctic expedition under the patronage of the Academy of Science and the Ministry of Public Instruction. A ship for the voyage is now under construction at Saint Malo. She will be especially equipped to resist ice. The party will leave France, May 15, for Spitzbergen, and thence will start for Franz Joseph Land. The expedition will be exclusively French. Lieutenant de Gerlach, who commanded the Belgian Antarctic steamer Belgica, will probably be a member of the party, which will also comprise several scientists. Dr. Charcot says France has hitherto left Arctic exploration to foreigners, and he hopes to revive French attention to the subject.
