OPENING to new VISTAS

When my friend Carl called and asked me to go with him and another close friend for a bachelor send-off weekend before Carl's upcoming wedding, I had no idea how those few days were going to change my life.

On a Thursday night, we met in Hoboken, New Jersey, to drive to Vermont for three days of hiking, hanging out, and eating great food. I had known Carl for about five years. We'd met at an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, and our sobriety, along with our search for how to become better men, were the mainstays of our friendship.

Over the time I'd known Carl, I'd been helping him develop his yoga business. I had been working as a professional business coach and consultant. By the time we went up to Vermont, we hadn't been together face-to-face for a while, though we'd kept in touch, and I noticed that something had been going on with Carl. There was a kind of unspoken humble strength in him that is hard to describe. The word clarity comes to mind when I think of how he expressed himself during our conversations that weekend.
