MY FIRST job right out of college was as an investment banking analyst in San Francisco. I worked for a major bank there for two years. I had been active in a number of deals supporting initial public offerings and merger-and-acquisitions for fast-growing technology firms. The work meant spending between 70 and 90 hours a week in the office. I even pulled the occasional all-nighter during crucial portions of a deal.
