He found God to be the most effective surgeon

For many years I had a lump in the middle of my chest, about the size of a US quarter. I never paid much attention to it, although I probably should have, in the sense of seeing it as something abnormal, which could be healed through prayer.

A little over three years ago, the lump became inflamed. The inflammation went on for several weeks, gradually becoming severer. I began to think that I should consider having it surgically removed.

Before deciding to go through with surgery, however, I called a friend who is a Christian Science practitioner. I thought we would have a friendly chat, and I could mention the condition on my chest. I didn't intend to ask her to pray for me. But her response—I'm happy to say—was immediate and forthright. She said she believed that God was by far the best and most effective surgeon. What she said about the truth of my nature as God's spiritual creation, and about my relationship with God, completely won me over. I asked if she would be willing to pray for me instead of my seeking an operation, and she agreed.
