Healing, wherever you are
For years, I had always been impressed when others told how during challenging moments they felt the love of God, which resulted in healing. Although I had had many healings through prayer myself, I had never felt the deep sense of God's love that some people talk about. I longed for such an experience and often felt there was something wrong with me. But now I can share an experience like that, too.
In 1995, I was the tour escort for a group on a river cruise in Russia. The morning we were to begin our journey home, I woke very ill, and, after experiencing vomiting and diarrhea, collapsed in bed. During moments of consciousness, I prayed. I had many fears, including the pressure to get well quickly because I was responsible for getting my group out of Russia. I knew from experience that dealing with the usual red tape required a great deal of energy and spiritual calm. I had no phone, so I could not call someone to pray for me.
I asked God for a clear idea that would open my eyes to His care and the preservation of my health. The thought that came to me was from Scripture, where Jesus commanded a paralyzed man to "Rise . . . and walk" (John 5:8). Up to this point in my understanding of spiritual healing, I assumed you had to have some great insight before you could "rise up." This command—to rise up and walk—seemed premature, as I hadn't yet had a significant spiritual break-through. But I decided to follow the thought anyway. I stood up, and immediately fell back into bed, too ill to rise. I concluded that I had been delirious and hadn't understood whatever God was telling me.
