'THE DOCTOR COULDN'T BELIEVE IT'

Mark wasn't quite one year old, and he was very run down with a bad cold and wheezy chest. We'd been to see a doctor, who gave Mark an antibiotic. The condition didn't heal at all. Mark became really quite poorly. One evening he had been to the surgery [clinic], and we were told we shouldn't take him out anymore and to keep him at home.

So our family doctor came to our house. By the time he arrived, Mark was in extremely bad shape. The doctor said that he was going to book Mark a place in hospital, because he did not expect Mark to live through the evening. He was in that critical a condition.

But I didn't want Mark to go to a hospital—I wanted him to be right there at home. So the doctor left, fully expecting us to call him during the night to come back. As you can imagine, I was in a desperate state. At a time like this, you are incredibly emotional.
