A daughter's diabetes HEALED

KIDS CAN FALL OFF SOFAS. They can trip on carpets. They can run into the street. So parents have to be very alert, as I have learned from observing my brother and sister-in-law in action, devotedly caring for their two- and six-year-old kids, never ceasing to attentively watch their every move.

Jane and Tony Laws are also watchful parents. They have been married for 22 years and live in a converted barn in Wisbech, Lincolnshire, in the UK. They have lovingly watched over their son, Mark, and his younger sister, Victoria, since Mark was born, 21 years ago.

Jane, with Tony's full support, has also put into practice another kind of watching over their kids—a prayerful watch. And they've had more than the odd fall on the carpet to contend with. For example, when Mark was only a year old, the family doctor predicted that Mark would not survive the night. Prayer defied that verdict, though, and 20 years later Mark is studying at Leed's University for a career in teaching physical education (see sidebar on page 15).
