Change in thought heals acute pain

A few months ago, I was leaving home to chair a meeting, when I suddenly found myself doubled over with great abdominal pain. I felt like falling to the floor and couldn't stand up straight. So I just steadied myself and prayed.

I didn't spend time wondering what the cause of the problem was. Christian Science had taught me that God is the only cause and that the effects that come from God must be good, like Him. As I reached out to God for a healing idea, I remember thinking that this pain was not so much physical, as it was a temptation not to go forward with the business I needed to do. The meeting's purpose was to share ideas on our church's healing services and how they could help bring peace to our homes, community, and between nations.

When the fleeting idea came to mind that going ahead with my plans was not possible that day, I thought of a familiar statement: "progress is the law of God." The complete sentence containing those words is this: "Every day makes its demands upon us for higher proofs rather than professions of Christian power. These proofs consist solely in the destruction of sin, sickness, and death by the power of Spirit, as Jesus destroyed them. This is an element of progress, and progress is the law of God, whose law demands of us only what we can certainly fulfil" (Science and Health, p. 233).
