Larry King Live! viewers respond to CNN interview
"I have a taxi waiting outside. Where is that book I saw on the Larry King Live! show?" asked a woman who had just run into a Christian Science Reading Room in Toronto, Canada. The book she was asking for was Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures by Mary Baker Eddy, a resource for spiritual healing.
For a second time in 18 months, Larry King asked to interview Virginia Harris, Chairman of The Christian Science Board of Directors. The one-hour program that resulted aired May 4, 2001. Mrs. Harris answered questions relating to Christian Science and spoke of the healing ideas in Science and Health. People around the globe listened to the broadcast, and many were touched by what they heard. One family in Belgium, for example, got up at three in the morning so they could be sure to see it.
Following are comments from viewers.
A woman from Georgia was already familiar with spiritual healing, but had not explored Christian Science because of her mistaken impression of it. After viewing the show, she was intrigued and wanted to read Science and Health and find out if it could help heal her husband's degnerative eye condition.
A chiropractor, interested in healing, referred to the therapeutic value of Science and Health. "I can just turn to this medicine," she said. "Divine Mind is medicine."
A man who works for a shipping company in Chile and was staying in New Jersey saw the interview and was so impressed that he drove over an hour to get to New York City and find a Christian Science Reading Room, where he was able to purchase literature he felt would be helpful.
A former nurse who lives in Michigan and has become discouraged with conventional medicine responded to the program, saying, "This is the religion I've been looking for."
One Christian Scientist wanted to watch the program but didn't have cable TV. She asked a friend if she could watch at her house. The friend agreed and they watched it together. Afterward the friend, who is Jewish, said, "That was amazing. I guess I need a copy of that book!" Her friend was glad to give her one.
A South African man found that the program touched his brother's life in an unexpected way. He said, "My brother and I [attended a] Christian Science Sunday School in Zimbabwe. I have remained a student of Christian Science while my brother has become antagonistic toward it.
"I always avoid the subject when I am with him. He told me the other day that for some reason he happened to turn the television on and heard the interview. I was most surprised that he hadn't immediately turned off the television, and, what is more, he was impressed by Mrs. Harris's confidence in prayer. I told him that I had also heard the interview and felt the same way about it. We left it at that."
An American viewer reported, "I had been suffering from a heavy and dark depression for several months, finding no relief in any treatment, including my own 'prayer.' Actually, I was just begging some being to heal me, grabbing at metaphysical straws, as it were. [Then Virginia Harris] talked about prayer as becoming silent and still and applying the principles of Truth to a situation in need of healing.
"I closed my eyes and began simply to be still. I began to have insight into the truth that all is God and seeing myself as separate from God was a mistake. I continued with this exercise throughout the night, and the next day it was as if I were lifted up out of the darkness.
"I have continued my new prayer method since and continue to be free from depression. I had read Mrs. Eddy's book in the past and remembered some of the basic principles of Christian Science, although I had forgotten them. I plan now to continue to pray and read Science and Health again."
