More tennis the same week

Several years ago, I met a friend for tennis. We had hardly played 15 minutes, when I suddenly felt muscles in my lower leg tear. It was really tough to walk to the car and drive home, and the pain was severe. I prayed about being very afraid.

I turned to the Bible and was comforted by the assurances of the Psalms—that each of us is in God's care. After a half hour of prayer had brought no relief, I called a Christian Science practitioner, who agreed to pray with me right away. He directed my attention to "the demands of the Science of Soul" (see Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by Mary Baker Eddy, pp. 467–468).

At first as I read passages from these pages, I didn't see the connection between the two needs, to have one God and to love my neighbor. As I prayed, however, I saw that by following the First Commandment—in this case refusing to make a god of pain or injury—I was also loving my neighbor, because the world would also be blessed by any healing that resulted.
