In 1999, a short time before I was to leave on a two-week business trip to the other side of the world, I was doing some work in my garden. At one point I felt a sudden dislocation in my left knee.

At times there was no strength in my knee, and I couldn't put any weight on it. I was especially anxious because my wife was going to travel with me and had been looking forward to discovering new horizons.
