In March, the Religion Communicators Council recognized the contributions made by religious magazines, newspapers, non-broadcast audio and video, and electronic publishing produced by many different denominations in 1999. The awards are given for "excellence in religious communications and public relations." The Christian Science Sentinel and its sister publication The Christian Science Journal each received one of the 1999 DeRose-Hinkhouse Memorial Awards.

The Sentinel received a Certificate of Merit in the "National Magazines" category. The Journal's Certificate of Merit was for the cover design of an issue that focused on "A whole new phase of creativity" (September 1999).

"If war is ever abolished it will be as the result of long and patient work by a few inspired reformers in the face of much resistance," wrote Anthony H. Richmond, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at York University in Toronto, more than forty-five years ago. He recently quoted this observation in an article entitled "Wars and Peacekeeping," in which he pointed out the continuing threat of war to society. In his article, he added: "The time may come when we shall look back upon war with as much shame and incredulity as we do now upon the institution of . . . slavery, once thought to be not only economically inevitable but morally justified. Meanwhile the search for some alternative to war must continue."
